Stress & TMJ

With the current climate, it’s understandable if you are feeling a little stressed. You may have noticed you are clenching or grinding your teeth. Stress may subconsciously contribute to us clenching more frequently than usual, which creates more pressure within the jaw (or temporomandibular joints). Over time, this can lead to poor control of the muscles responsible for opening and closing the mouth. Don't panic, it’s not uncommon, some people aren't even aware they are doing it!

Stress and teeth grinding are factors that can possibly lead to developing TMJ Disorder (TMD) It’s not usually serious and can get better on its own.

What is TMJ?

The TMJ connects your lower jaw (mandible) to the skull (temporal bone) in front of your ear.

What symptoms might I have?

There is a range of symptoms you may experience which include

- Pain while chewing

- Locking of the jaw joint

- Headaches

- Pain in your ear, face, jaw or neck

- Clicking, grating or popping sound when you open or close our mouth

Is there anything I can do to help it?

Yes! Here are some Do's and Don’ts you might find helpful

Do -

- eat soft food, like pasta, omelettes and soup

- take paracetamol or ibuprofen

- hold ice packs or heat packs to the jaw, whichever feels better

- try to find ways to relax (not always easy, we know!)

Don't -

- chew gum

- bite food with your front teeth

- yawn too wide

- bite your nails

- clench your teeth – apart from when eating, your teeth should be apart

- rest your chin on your hand

There are also some exercises you can do yourself that will help ease symptoms

Exercises

Relaxed Jaw Position

Place the tongue lightly on the top of your mouth behind your upper front teeth, allowing the teeth to come apart and relaxing the jaw muscles.

‘Goldfish’ Exercise 1 (partial opening)

1. Keep tongue on the roof of your mouth.

2. Place one index finger on the TMJ.

3. Place your other index finger on your chin.

4. Allow the lower jaw to partially drop down and back with help from the index finger.

5. Monitor this partial jaw opening in a mirror to make sure the opening is straight (tongue stays up). Repeat 6 times, 6 times a day 5

‘Goldfish’ Exercise 2 (partial opening)

1. Keep tongue on the roof of your mouth.

2. Place one finger on each TMJ.

3. Allow the lower jaw to partially drop down and back to bring the chin to the throat.

4. Monitor this partial jaw opening in a mirror to make sure the opening is straight. Repeat 6 times, 6 times a day

‘Goldfish’ Exercise 3 (full opening)

1. Keep tongue on the roof of your mouth.

2. Place one index finger on the TMJ.

3. Place your other index finger on your chin.

4. Allow the lower jaw to fully drop down and back with help from the index finger.

5. Monitor this full jaw opening in a mirror to make sure the opening is straight (tongue stays up). (Progression: perform with tongue dropped off the roof of the mouth) 6

‘Goldfish’ Exercise 4 (full opening)

Sugar free polos

Recently Jacky sent some sugar free Polo’s to the horses at the Glenda Spooner farm in Somerset.
The farm is a World Horse Welfare centre. Their mission is to work with horses, horse owners, communities, organisations and governments to help improve welfare standards and stamp out suffering in the UK and worldwide. Ultimately aiming for every horse to be treated with respect, compassion and understanding.

We received a lovely thank you letter and photo!

Just a quick note to thank you for the Sugar Free Polo’s which all of the horses here are very grateful to receive. They don’t often get mints so this is a real treat for them.

This is a photo of one of our youngsters Oliver enjoying a couple of mints with our Farm Manager Claire.

We hope to welcome you to Glenda Spooner Farm for a visit in the future and in the meantime wish you all the best.

Kindest regards,

Ellie and all the horses and ponies in our care J

  • I was a very anxious patient prior to being treated by Kasia, having had some bad experiences with other dentists and had therefore been reluctant to visit the dentist for some time. Kasia is wonderful with nervous patients - she listened to my fears, always explained everything that she was going to do and made sure that I was as comfortable as I could be before treatment. Since being treated by Kasia, visits to the dentist no longer fill me with fear! E.A

Its friendly, welcoming & feels more like a hotel than a dentist. The surgery facilities are excellent & I always feel that I am getting the very best of treatment. In particular I find Claudine one of the gentlest dentists I have ever come across. She patiently explains all aspects of the treatment & then delivers it painlessly. I could not recommend them enough.-MB
